It can be a daunting thing to think about getting pregnant after miscarriage because of the fear of a second recurrence. A miscarriage, referred to by doctors as a spontaneous abortion, is the loss of a pregnancy before around twenty weeks. Statistics from the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, miscarriages will happen in around 25 percent of all known pregnancies. In real terms this rate is probably higher, as many miscarriages occur in the very early stages of pregnancy before a woman is even aware she is pregnant.
It is not totally understood why women miscarry. Miscarriages that occur in the first twelve weeks of a pregnancy are believed to be the result of a random occurrence of chromosomal abnormalities present in the foetus, and this inhibits its normal development and causes a miscarriage.
Of course the state of the mother’s health also plays a part. Medical conditions like un-tended diabetes or structural problems in the woman’s uterus which result in an improper egg implantation can affect a miscarriage, as can a number of autoimmune conditions in the mother. A woman’s lifestyle and factors such as smoking or inappropriate drug abuse can all lead to an increased likelihood of miscarriage. Apart from the above mentioned factors, a large number of miscarriages happen when the egg has been improperly implanted into the uterine lining - this can be remedied by knowing the right times each month for intercourse, which we will come to further on in the article.
Vaginal Bleeding and other fluids and tissue being expelled from the vagina, pelvic and abdominal cramps and pain are all signs that may precede a miscarriage. Many women experience some blood spotting during early pregnancy, so although bleeding precedes a miscarriage, it is not always the case that when there is some blood you are miscarrying.
Most miscarriages in the early stages do not require medical treatment as the uterus voluntarily empties out like a heavy period. If there is tissue that remains in the uterus (which shows up on an ultrasound) then a procedure to cleanse the uterus, or medication to make the uterus expel the remaining tissue may be required. It is important that no tissue remains in the uterus in order to stop any infection forming. It is best if couples do not try getting pregnant after miscarriage for at least a couple of months, six months is best. For couples who experience recurring miscarriages there are tests which can try and determine the cause and a solution.
It is important before going out and getting any of these (sometimes painful) tests, that you make sure that the improper implantation of the egg into the uterine lining is not the cause. The likelihood of this can be reduces significantly by trying for a baby at the appropriate monthly times.
This time is when there is a cervical fluid which has the resemblance of eggwhites, which is the woman’s most fertile time of the month. For men who’s sperm count is normal then intercourse should be undertaken every day that the eggwhite-like cervical mucus comes, up until the woman charts a rise in her basal temperature. Men who’s sperm count less should have sex on every second day of the eggwhite mucus and stop when a rise in temperature occurs. This will not only increase the chances of conception, but will also decrease the likelihood of miscarriage caused from improper implantation of the ovum in the uterine lining.
It is also crucial to be healthy before trying to conceive. This means that diet, weight and exercise are all important to maintain before conception takes place. Quitting cigarettes and not being around other people’s smoke is also important. Caffeine should not be ingested, and alcohol is a definite no-go. External toxins from paints and such things are important to avoid, so if you are painting the house, use ‘green’ products, and re-carpeting should be avoided as many new carpets have loads of formaldehyde in them. Importantly for getting pregnant after miscarriage, you have to remember to look at lifestyle factors like stress and emotional worries, and try to have intercourse at the appropriate time of the month.
