For those with toddlers, the main problems occur with toddler tantrums, health issues, child’s development and social factors. Temper tantrums can be dealt with by diffusing the tantrum before it properly begins. Distract the child by asking them a question or by showing them something to take their focus off of the issue that has made them cross.

Using distraction techniques you should be able to get your child to forget what it was they were about to get cross about before it begins. Shyness in social situations is common in young children.

leaving them and not saying goodbye is likely to make their separation worse. They will cling more if you do this as they know that as soon as they leave you, you will go and not say bye. So they will not leave you. Always tell them where you are going and when you will be coming back to get them. Arrange a special treat for when you come back to them.

If not they will think that every time you leave their side, you will go and not come back. If handling an older child who is misbehaving, you could try a time out scenario where you place them safely on the stairs for them to think about what they have done wrong and how they could have handled it better.

So in this instance a punishment of sorts can be issued to make them realise the implications that will occur if they misbehave. Things like taking away their favourite toy or game for a period of a day can work, as can the age old method of grounding. That is not letting them out to play with their friends as punishment.

Other problems that occur with older children are them wanting to do things that they say their friends are allowed to do that you are not happy with. Such as your 12 year old asking to go into town at the weekend with their friends.

If you are only objecting to them going without an adult, why not compromise and offer to drive them all there, see them into the correct film and then either have a coffee in the cafe or come back and collect them from the foyer when the film has finished?

The vast majority of situations that arise when bringing up children can be resolved with a little bit of understanding and patience. You must be able to recall being your child’s age and not being allowed to do things or feeling that no one understands where you are coming from. Talk to your child and listen, but remember to always be a parent first and a friend second.
